BOULDER, CO — For more than four decades, the annual Bolder Boulder race has drawn thousands of runners and wheelchair racers to Colorado. Race organizers initially postponed the 2020 event from Memorial Day to Labor Day, but now the spread of the coronavirus has led to the cancellation of this year's race, Bolder Boulder announced Monday.

"This is the most difficult decision we've ever had to make, but the health and safety of our participants and our community are paramount," Bolder Boulder Race Director Cliff Bosley said in a public notice.

Event organizers consulted with the University of Colorado Boulder and City of Boulder before making their decision.

"To say we are disappointed to have to come to this decision is a severe understatement. This has been all we have known for the last 41 years," Bolder Boulder organizers said in a statement.

Drawing more than 50,000 runners and wheelchair racers annually, Bolder Boulder is the second largest 10K race in the U.S. and the 5th largest road race in the world. Three starting waves of the race are dedicated to members of the U.S. Armed Forces, and the race ends each year at the University of Colorado Boulder's Folsom Field with a Memorial Day tribute.
