The Boulder County Board of Health has approved an extension of the county's face covering order, which will remain in place until it's rescinded, health officials said.

"We know it's unpleasant to wear a face covering. None of us are excited to wear them. But it's a small inconvenience that can save lives and our economy," said Jeff Zayach, Boulder County Public Health's executive director.

"Wearing face coverings in public is not a political statement; it's an important tool in our toolbox to help slow the spread of this disease. If we can slow the spread, we'll be able to enter the Protect Your Neighbor phase which will allow us to further reopen our economy."

In late June, the city of Boulder announced an amendment to its Abatement of Public Nuisance Code in an effort to combat the spike in cases. The code change will allow the city to pursue abatement if a property repeatedly has noise violations or hosts large gatherings. The majority of new COVID-19 cases were confirmed after large gatherings in the University Hill neighborhood.

Denver, Arapahoe and Weld counties consistently have the highest overall number of cases in the state; however over the past week, Logan, Morgan and Saguache counties have had the highest case rates per 100,000 people.

As of Thursday, 33,352 people have been infected with the coronavirus in Colorado among 337,391 people who have been tested since the outbreak began, health officials confirmed. Around 5,527 people have been hospitalized, and the death toll among people who tested positive for COVID-19 has reached 1,701.
