Boulder Prepares For First Cold Snap Of Season: City
Emergency sheltering available, snow crews prepare for snow and ice, preventing freezing pipes

BOULDER, CO -- From the City of Boulder: City snow crews are monitoring the weather forecast and road conditions, and crews will be out early Thursday morning to apply anti-icing or de-icing materials and plow, as needed, to help make streets safe for morning commuters.
Safety is the city’s top priority for snow and ice removal, and residents are encouraged to take extra care when traveling, giving snow plows plenty of room and allowing extra time for stopping. Motorists should not attempt to pass snow plows or de-icing trucks, which are both wider than one traffic lane. More information on snow and ice removal, including which streets and paths are plowed, can be found at bouldercolorado.gov/public-works/snow.
Individuals who are experiencing homelessness and seeking shelter on severe weather nights can receive updated information on shelter openings and locations through Bridge House. Severe weather shelter will be open Wednesday night and will be located at St. Andrews Presbyterian Church at 37th Street and Baseline Road (bus 225). Severe weather sheltering locations change daily, and updates are posted to boulderbridgehouse.org/severe-weather-shelter and on their telephone hotline, 303-605-8919.
Per city ordinance, sidewalks must be cleared of snow and ice within 24 hours of when the snow stops. Residents can check the National Weather Service snowfall report to find out when snow stopped falling. Residents who are able might consider volunteering for the Boulder County IceBusters program to help seniors and people with physical disabilities clear their sidewalks.
As temperatures dip below freezing, residents are also reminded to take steps to prevent frozen pipes and know where water shut-off valves are in case pipes freeze and break. For residents going away for the holidays, keep the thermostat set to a temperature no lower than 55° F. A complete list of tips to prepare pipes for cold weather can be found on InquireBoulder.com .
