BOULDER, CO — The restoration of the Anemone Hill Trail could begin as early as Thursday, the City of Boulder's Open Space and Mountain Parks Department announced. The project, which will restore the trail system west of the city, is expected to take two years, parks officials said.

The construction of the new loop trail will replace many existing undesignated or social trails west of the Red Rocks formation. The project will coincide with work to restore native vegetation and to limit disturbances to sensitive wildlife habitats, parks officials said.

Short-term closures of trails — in the Red Rocks area, near Centennial and Settlers Park — are expected when heavy equipment and helicopters are operating. The project may require the use of helicopters for six to eight days, officials said. The current Anemone Hill Trail is expected to be open evenings and weekends.

If you're planning a hike in the area, make sure to check either OSMP Trails or the new Boulder Area Trails App for intermittent closures in the area.

People who head into closure areas while the project is underway will be ticketed and could be fined up to $1,000 or spend up to 90 days in jail, officials warned.

Parks staff are also reminding hikers that a Boulder County public health order requires everyone over age 12 to wear a face covering anytime they can't maintain at least six feet of social distancing.
