City Of Boulder Wins Innovative Water Solutions Award

BOULDER, CO — The City of Boulder was part of a team that won a national water challenge competition. The group, which included the Colorado School of Mines and Carollo Engineering, placed first among 17 teams in the 2019 Intelligent Water Systems Challenge.

Hosted by the Leaders Innovation Forum for Technology, the competition is a joint effort of the Water Environment Federation and the Water Research Foundation.

The award was received for “supporting innovation excellence in intelligent water system practices and promoting meaningful opportunities for fostering the adoption of smart water technologies.”

The team, comprised of multidisciplinary engineers, developed Model Predictive Control Systems with the goal of increasing energy efficiency and optimization at the Boulder Water Resource Recovery Facility.

"Boulder’s success in this challenge was made possible by the daily commitment of Operations, Maintenance and Process Automation Systems employees at the WRRF," the city stated in a news release. "These employees maintain the vital functions of a complex wastewater treatment system and uphold a high standard of customer service."

The challenge promotes innovation in smart water technology by leveraging data management and analysis to improve process performance. The purpose of the competition is to encourage the water community to use available data within utilities to better understand complex systems and make better decisions.
