Gov. Jared Polis has urged Coloradans to go out into nature, where "social distancing" can be adhered to, and hikers have taken that advice — many trails in the state have seen a surge of visitors.

Parks officials are also encouraging people to be outdoors, but have issued guidelines for hikers.

  • Do not visit parks if you're sick — stay home and help protect others.
  • Announce your presence to others to help maintain the recommended six feet of social distance. Make sure you call out or ring a bell when passing others.
  • Bring your own hand sanitizer and exercise caution in public restrooms.
  • If a parking lot is full, move on to another park or trailhead.
  • Don't organize large group gatherings.
  • Frequently clean and disinfect any shared hiking, climbing or sporting equipment.
