Husband, Murdered Wife Were Nurses With Boulder Community Health

A Frederick woman who was shot and killed and her husband, who died of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound, were both Boulder Community Health nurses.

Emily Butler, 35, was found fatally shot Friday afternoon in the couple's home at 7119 Shavano Circle. Her husband, 50-year-old Kevin Butler, was named a person of interest in the case. He was found dead in his car later that night in Nederland, authorities said.

Spokesman Rich Sheehan released a statement on behalf of Boulder Community Health.

"The Boulder Community Health family has been shocked and saddened by the tragic deaths of Emily Lykke Butler and Kevin Butler, two of our nurses," the statement read. "We offer our heartfelt condolences to their families, friends and colleagues at BCH."

Kevin Butler's death initially appeared to be a car crash; however the Boulder County Sheriff's Office said he actually died of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound, and his vehicle rolled forward and struck a tree.

Emily Butler's death is being investigated by the Weld County Coroner's Office as a homicide. Kevin Butler's cause of death will be confirmed by the Boulder County Coroner's Office.

The couple's relationship began as an affair, neighbors told the Daily Camera. Kevin Butler's wife filed for a divorce, which was finalized earlier this year, according to the report. Kevin and Emily Butler married soonafter.
