Here are the top stories in Boulder today:

  1. Superior waives sprinkler requirement to rebuild. On Monday, the Superior Board of Trustees voted to allow those rebuilding from the Marshall Fire, to opt out of the town's building code requiring sprinkler systems inside homes. To meet that code requirement, it was estimated to cost much as $30,000. (9News)
  2. Scientists indicate there's only a "small window" to avoid full-blown climate crisis. Greenhouse gases have increased significantly since the first alarm was sounded in 1990. Trapped heat has grown by nearly 50 percent since then, and is caused mostly by human activities, according to NOAA scientists that presented at the Global Monitoring conference. (CO Sun)
  3. Boulder Police find cash, drugs and two toddlers in stolen car. Last Saturday in Boulder, police discovered illegal drugs, cash, along with two children in the backseat of the car without seatbelts or child seats. The two adults were charged with motor vehicle theft, theft of auto parts, possession with intent to distribute and child abuse. (CBS4)
  4. Golden High School still struggling with mental health crisis. In 2015, three Golden High School students committed suicide. From those tragic deaths, the school started working with a nonprofit that encourages one-on-one conversations, and how to change the stigmas around youth mental health. (CPR)
  5. Boulder City Council meetings will continue as virtual meetings, for now. City Council has postponed its plan to return to hybrid meetings after Boulder County moved into the CDC's medium level of risk. The county has 350 COVID-19 cases per 100,000. (Yahoo!)

  • Increased snowmelt and runoff are allowing Barker Reservoir to start spilling within the next week, beginning today. This is a normal annual event that increases flows in the Boulder Creek as it passes through downtown Boulder. (Boulder)
  • Boulder County looking to adjust 2022 property values for Marshall Fire properties.
    The Assessor's Office will allow county residents impacted by the Marshall fire to determine an adjusted fair market value for homes and real property that was destroyed or damaged. The deadline to appeal is June 1. (BOCO)
  • May is Wildfire Awareness Month. The goal is to help homeowners to complete critical mitigation measures and to become better prepared for future wildfires. (Facebook)
