Sports run deep in Boulder, and Boulder High School has long been at the heart of it. It’s no surprise some standout talent once wore the Panther uniform. Today we're celebrating five unforgettable athletes from Boulder High School who made a name for themselves well beyond the hometown field.


Heath Irwin – Multi-Team NFL Offensive Lineman

Heath Irwin, a Boulder High graduate, became a standout offensive lineman at the University of Colorado before playing in the NFL. He was a high school and college All-American and helped lead a record-setting CU offense. Drafted by the New England Patriots in 1996, Irwin went on to play for the Patriots, Dolphins and Rams, making the playoffs in five of his first six seasons. Melody Fairchild – National Champion Distance Runner and Youth Coach

A Boulder High legend, Melody Fairchild was the first American high school girl to break 10 minutes in the two-mile and won back-to-back national cross-country titles. She went on to compete internationally, earning a bronze at the World Cross Country Championships and becoming an NCAA champion at the University of Oregon. Today, she coaches youth runners through Boulder Mountain Warriors and continues to inspire young athletes with her passion and experience. (Source: MelodyFairchild.com)

Bobby Anderson – CU Football Legend and First-Round NFL Pick

A Boulder native, Bobby Anderson starred at Boulder High before becoming one of the University of Colorado’s most iconic football players. A dual-threat quarterback and later a running back, Anderson earned All-America honors in 1969 and set a Liberty Bowl rushing record with 254 yards against Alabama. He played in the NFL with the Denver Broncos, New England Patriots and Washington. He was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 2006. (Source: National Football Foundation)


Tyler Graham – Division I Volleyball Libero and All-State Scholar-Athlete

A four-time All-Conference and Academic First Team honoree at Boulder High, Tyler Graham continued her volleyball career at DePaul University, where she led the team in digs during her senior season. Graham earned multiple tournament honors, including MVP recognition and over 400 digs in 2015. She was also named Boulder High’s 2012 Female Athlete of the Year. (Source: DePaul Athletics)

Mike Stanley – Three-Time Collegiate Wrestling Champion and Trailblazing Coach

Mike Stanley, a 1964 Boulder High graduate, became the only Colorado wrestler to win three consecutive national college titles, earning All-American status at Adams State University. His coaching career spanned decades at Boulder, Fairview and beyond, where he mentored 23 state qualifiers and pioneered women’s wrestling. Stanley was inducted into multiple halls of fame, including the NAIA and Adams State University. He passed away at age 70 in 2015. (Source: National Wrestling Hall of Fame)
