Pumpkin Pie Days At The Fairgrounds

Century old tradition includes antiques, a vintage market, and a pumpkin pie cafe.

LONGMONT, CO -- With a sense of tradition more than a century old, antique and vintage dealers will set up shop at the Boulder County fairgrounds for Pumpkin Pie Days this weekend. Hosted by the St. Vrain Historical Society, both the Saturday and Sunday events will feature more than 80 vendors with free admission for children. The event will run from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m on Saturday and 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday.

The first Pumpkin Pie Days were held in 1899, according to the Historical Society, and the pumpkin was chosen as celebrant because it was one of the most unique crops grown in Longmont at the time. The women of Longmont are rumored to have baked 5,000 pies for that first event. Although the festival grew bigger every year until 1914, it took a hiatus after that year to make room for the Boulder County Fair.

The Pumpkin Festival returned after World War II. The event today still attracts visitors from across the state, and offers each a slice of pie with whipped cream from Longmont Dairy.

The St. Vrain Historical Society became an official non-profit in 1967. It recently established a landmark commission that now operates through a city ordinance to landmark places of historical significance in the area.
