🌱 Recycling Rate Really Low + Pedestrian Hit Downtown + Economic News

Hi all. It's me, Brad K. Evans, your host of the Daily. Let's get this day started off right with a quick review of the most important things happening around town, including updates on:

  • Boulder man got COVID-19 relief funds, but turns out made up the numbers.
  • Colorado's economy is still struggling, but it's better than most of the U.S.
  • The state's recycling rate is dismally low, only 16 percent of our trash was diverted from landfills last year.

Here are the top stories today in Boulder:

  1. Boulder man that fraudulently obtained COVID-19 relief funds pleads guilty. Russell Lester applied for, and received four EIDL loans through the Small Business Administration (SBA) worth more than $217,000. He also received received three SBA-funded grants along with several PPP loans and received unemployment benefits from the state of Colorado. Turns out that the funds were all based on false statements about how the corona virus had impacted the business. (9News)
  2. Colorado economy is still struggling from the pandemic, but is still doing better than most of the U.S. Colorado's economy continued to prosper in in the third quarter 2022, propelled mostly by job growth, according to the Quarterly Business and Economic Indicators report, which is prepared by the CU/Leeds Business Research Division and the State of Colorado.   3. Colorado has a dismal recycling rate, but advocates are hoping to turn it around. Colorado's recycling rate is low, really low, with only 16 percent of the state's waste currently being diverted from landfills. But there's hope. Last year, the producer responsibility program was passed into law, and it requires that companies making paper, packaging and food utensils fund a statewide recycling system. (CPR)
  4. Pedestrian seriously injured in crash near downtown Boulder. The crash occurred on Sunday at 15th and Canyon. A pedestrian was struck Sunday evening and was taken to the hospital with serious injuries. (Yahoo!)
