CLEAR CREEK COUNTY, CO — The road to the top of Mount Evans is breathtaking in more than one way — it's beautiful, it's at high altitude, and for many — its winding path near cliff edges causes anxiety. But at least those who head up the mountain in the summer don't have to encounter powerful winter storms and deadly ice — for that reason, transportation officials close the highway during the winter.

The top five miles of the road will close on Tuesday, September 3, just after Labor Day.

The Labor Day weekend is typically the busiest for those summiting Mount Evans — both by car and on foot, according to the Colorado Department of Transportation. Drivers are expected to encounter wait times of up to 30 minutes over the popular weekend.
