Stapleton, Lopez Take Leads in GOP Assembly Vote For Primary

Walker Stapleton and former Parker Mayor Greg Lopez survive the assembly hurdle, with Cynthia Coffman gaining only 6 percent of vote.

BOULDER, CO -- Walker Stapleton walked away from the Boulder Republican State Assembly as top vote-getter with 43 percent of delegate votes Saturday. A surprise second was former Parker Mayor Greg Lopez, who got 32 percent of the delegate votes, meeting the 30 percent threshold that will allow him onto the ballot for the June 26 Republican primary.

Late joiner Barry Farah received 12 percent of the votes and Attorney General Cynthia Coffman came in fourth with 6 percent of delegate votes. Other candidates in the crowded field to replace term-limited John Hickenlooper did not meet the 30 percent threshold, and won't be on the ballot. These were Steve Barlock, Lew Gaiter and Teri Kear.

Two candidates, Doug Robinson and Victor Mitchell, hope to petition their way into the GOP primary if their petition signatures are certified by the Secretary of State's office.

Stapleton's presence at the assembly was a redirection, after he withdrew his petition signatures Tuesday, claiming he had been defrauded by Kennedy Enterprises, LLC who allegedly hired unqualified circulators. This caused a conflict over delegates who had been formerly supporting Coffman, the Denver Post reported.
