Here are the top stories today in Boulder:

  1. Boulder's emergency warming shelter opened Wednesday afternoon. A 24-hour emergency warming shelter was opened on Wednesday in preparation of keeping people out of the arctic blast that has hit the region. The shelter is at the East Boulder Community Center and will stay open through Saturday morning. (FOX31)
  2. A change in timekeeping is coming to Boulder's atomic clocks. For almost 50 years, NIST scientists have added an extra second to the atomic clocks it maintains in an effort to keep them in sync — they call it a "leap second." The practice is being eliminated after a vote at the General Conference on Weights and Measures. (7News)
  3. Environmental groups send clear message that the Colorado's new ozone plan totally misses the mark. Colorado's Air Quality Control Commission has approved a plan to reduce Colorado's ozone pollution, but everyone seems to agree that the approved plan won't actually meet required air quality standards set by the EPA. (Westword)
  4. More than 1,000 pets perished in the Marshall Fire. A new study by the University of Colorado estimates that around 1,182 house pets were affected by the fire. Only 24 animals were brought to the Humane Society of Boulder Valley and reunited with their owners. (KDVR)
