Here are the top stories in Colorado Springs today:

  1. The Colorado Springs City Council is discussing whether next year's budget should include a 3 percent employee pay increase that would make it easier to fill open city positions and prevent current workers from leaving for a higher-paying job. City officials said that because of economic conditions related to the COVID-19 pandemic, a salary increase is necessary to keep pay in city jobs competitive with jobs in similar cities elsewhere. Earlier this year, city employees received a one-time pay increase from federal COVID recovery funds. (KRDO)
  2. A California real estate company that develops communities for adults 55 and older plans 160 apartments in Colorado Springs, where it says demographics and growth patterns favor the project. Avenida Partners of Newport Beach would build a single, four-story apartment building on about six acres of land. Interior amenities tailored to active seniors would include a clubhouse, boutique hotel-style lobby entry, a bistro, fitness and yoga studios, private dining room, creative arts studio, game rooms, flexible meeting space and library area.
