Penrose Veteran Honored Nationally for #StillServing with Service Dog

Penrose veteran Geraldine Rimpley and her service dog Katy are being honored for dedication to country and community in the VFW #StillServing campaign. The national Veterans of Foreign Wars #StillServing campaign recognizes veterans who continue to serve in their community after the military, and during September's National Service Dog Month, that includes veterans' canine companions.

A 26-year US Army combat veteran, Rimpley always aspired to be elected as commander for the VFW department of Colorado but doubted she could successfully perform the duties because of her combat-induced PTSD. In 2019, she got Katy, her service dog, to assist with carrying out daily activities including driving in large cities and being in large crowds.

With Katy’s help she was able to become state commander this year and intends to teach, and mentor fellow veterans but most importantly, to share her success story of having a service dog and the programs available to help veterans get a service animal.

Rimpley says that without Katy she would not have been able to live a full and purposeful life and reach her goal of state leadership within the VFW.
