Sunstone Townhouses Fire: Fundraiser Telethon Monday

A telephone fundraiser will be held Monday by United Way to help 70 residents who were displaced in a massive fire in Colorado Springs.

COLORADO SPRINGS, CO -- After a devastating fire burned 20 townhouses in Colorado Springs March 26, more than 70 residents were displaced. United Way will sponsor a telethon fundraiser Monday through the Council of Neighbors and Organizations.

Those wishing to donate to the Sunstone Townhome Fire Fund can call 719-457-0640 on Monday from 4 to 6 p.m. The fundraiser will specifically help victims of the fire.

On Thursday, a bank fund was set up to help those displaced by the blaze. Those wanting to help families impacted can click here to donate online. You can also donate at the CONO office at 309 S. Cascade Ave., any ANB Banks in Colorado Springs, and Poor Richards at 320 N. Tejon St. in colorado Springs.

A lit cigarette tossed into mulch in a planter was determined by the Colorado Springs Fire Department to be the cause of the fast-moving destructive blaze that burned 20 townhouses on Charleston Drive in southeastern Colorado Springs. More than 60 firefighters fought the three-alarm blaze. A broken natural gas valve and high winds added to the flames, firefighters said at the time.

Three people were hospitalized with smoke inhalation and more than 70 were displaced and ended up a couple blocks away at First Pentecostal Church on Monica Street West. Several pets were unaccounted for.
