Suspected Burglar With Gun Fatally Shot By Colo. Springs Police

Jese Paul Schlegel, 41, was shot and killed by police April 25 as officers responded to a burglary in northwest Colorado Springs.

COLORADO SPRINGS, CO -- UPDATE Colorado Springs police identified a man shot and killed by police April 25 during a burglary investigation. A CSPD police officer shot and killed Jese Paul Schlegel, 41, police said.

About 6:15 a.m. officers were dispatched to investigate an alleged burglary in progress in the 1000 block of West 19th Street, the El Paso County Sheriff's office said.

When the first officer arrived, a man, later identified as Schlegel, ran from the building. The officer chased the man on foot, and Schlegel drew a pistol and threatened a witness who was also on the scene, a statement from the sheriff's office said.

At that point, the officer fired at Schlegel, striking him several times. Other responding officers and medical personnel arrived at the scene and tried to give the man emergency medical treatment. Schlegel was taken to a local area hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The CSPD officer involved in this incident is Troy Kananen, the CSPD said. Kananen has been employed by the department since April of 1994. He is assigned to the Patrol Bureau – Gold Hill Division.

As state protocol requires, the El Paso Sheriff's Office will be investigating the shooting.

Kananen has been placed on routine paid administrative leave in accordance with CSPD policy.
