Here are the top stories today in Colorado Springs:

  1. A man suspected of organizing a 2018 drug heist that ended in two killings saw his case go before a jury Monday morning. Marquis Hazard, 22, is accused of first-degree murder along with other crimes related to the 2018 shooting that killed 21-year-old Serena Garcia and 20-year-old Marcus Denton, both college students. Hazard, accused of being the driver and cover-up man in the killings, is being charged with murder under the complicity theory, which says he can be held responsible for the crimes for helping to commit them and cover them up.(Colorado Springs Gazette)
  2. Colorado Springs has the most in-demand real estate zip codes, 80906 and 80916, for 2021. According to an article by the New York Times, homes in those zip codes are only staying on the market for an average of four days before they are sold. The demand is in part because people are searching for affordable housing near their place of work. Listings in the southeast Colorado Springs region have seen a 36 percent increase in interest over the previous year. Real estate experts predict that the housing surge is here to stay for the next several years. (KRDO)
  3. El Paso County is accepting applications for another round of American Rescue Plan Act funding grants to help alleviate financial burdens and workforce challenges faced by local organizations that support local businesses and tourism. (Colorado Springs Gazette)
  4. The body found in Section 16 trailhead on Gold Camp Road located in unincorporated El Paso County has been identified as 56-year-old Martin Camarata. The cause and manner of death will be determined by the El Paso County Coroner's Office. (epcsheriffsoffice.com)
  5. Gas prices in Colorado Springs show a slight 2.2 cents per gallon decrease over the past week. (KRDO)
