📰 News we're reading

• Cortez Speedway closes out racing season by naming 2026 track champions (the-journal.com) — Racing fans in Cortez can look back on a full summer at Cortez Fairgrounds Speedway, where local drivers from Montezuma County and the Four Corners battled for 2026 season titles. Dove Creek’s Spangler family claimed two class championships, while Cortez racers like Jimmy Wilson and Rafe O’Brien earned podium finishes in tightly contested divisions that kept hometown pride roaring all season.

• Taxing ballot questions - and a Cortez tax holiday - could cause confusion this fall (ksjd.org) — If you live in Cortez, expect a temporary city sales-tax holiday from October 18 through December 31, dropping the city rate to zero on many purchases. At the same time, Cortez voters will decide Ballot Question 2A, which could triple the city’s lodgers tax to fund tourism, economic development, walkability improvements, and arts and cultural projects, alongside separate Mancos and county lodging-tax proposals.

• No Kings now has more than 40 events planned for Oct. 17 in Colorado (kansas.com) — Cortez is among more than 40 Colorado communities slated to host No Kings events on October 17, blending protests with voter-mobilization efforts. Organized by a coalition of faith, labor, civil rights and progressive groups, the actions are timed around ballot drop-box openings and early voting, and locals may want to plan whether to participate, counter-protest, or steer clear of the gatherings.
