6,000 Fort Carson Soldiers to Head to Afghanistan
Long-rumored deployment was announced Thursday by Obama-era chief in an unexpected speech under Trump's new secrecy rules.

Colorado Springs, CO - More than 6,000 Fort Carson soldiers will ship out to the Taliban-active province of Kandahar within the next few months as part of a renewed U.S. military surge strategy, soldiers and civilians were told Thursday at the base. Troops at a speech expecting to hear about an employment program for veterans, instead got the news of the Fort Carson deployment at a speech by Obama-era chief Patrick Murphy.
Reports Erin Prater on www.coloradopolitics.com:
[Murphy] told a crowd of troops and civilians that the 4th Infantry Division headquarters and its 2nd Brigade Combat Team are the units headed to Afghanistan.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with you,” Murphy said of the deployment. “Get the job done.”
The strange source of the deployment announcement comes as the Pentagon shows growing reluctance to talk about which units will head overseas to accomplish President Donald Trump’s goal of winning the 16-year-old Afghanistan war.
Fort Carson did not confirm the deployment, Prater wrote.
