Ammonia Leak Closes Denver Fish Shop, Evacuates Neighborhood
The Denver Fire Dept. evacuated businesses near Seattle Fish Co. to take care of an ammonia leak.

DENVER, CO -- Toxic ammonia vapors from a leak at a Denver business had the Denver Fire Department evacuating nearby neighbors Tuesday morning. The leak was reported at Seattle Fish Co, in the 6200 block of East 42nd Avenue around 11:30 a.m. By 12:30, emergency workers gave the all-clear and evacuees were allowed to return. Anhydrous ammonia, a colorless gas with "pungent, suffocating fumes," is used in industrial refrigeration systems. When it leaks, it expands rapidly, forming a large cloud that acts like a heavier-than-air gas for a period of time and can cause health issues, according to the Centers for Disease Control.
