Bystander Killed In Denver Gunfire Exchange Identified

Terrance Wardlow, 59, a former U.S. Marine, was killed by gunfire in a Denver gang-related shootout in LoDo Nov. 20.

DENVER, CO – A 59-year-old bystander killed during a shootout between rival gang members last week in Denver's Ballpark neighborhood was identified Monday by the Denver Office of the Medical Examiner.

Terrance Wardlow was shot and died at the scene on Nov. 20, the medical examiner's office said. The incident took place around 4 p.m., when two purported members of rival Crips factions allegedly engaged in a gun battle at 21st and Lawrence Streets.

Wardlow was a former U.S. Marine, his daughter Tarica Pickett of Houston, Texas said. He had been living in Denver for several years.

Along with Wardlow, three other bystanders were injured by gunfire. Also injured was one of the alleged gunmen, Dashae Eugene Armstrong, 23, who limped to the nearby Marquis Theater with a a gunshot wound to his leg, according to the USAO affidavit. Armstrong told investigators he had been shot by a man "wearing a ski mask."

Armstrong is alleged to be a "Tre Deuce Crip" gang member. The other shooter, Joshua Hayward, 24, was reportedly a "Tre Tre Crip" gang member. Hayward faces first-degree murder charges.

Both Armstrong and Hayward were arrested within 24 hours of the shooting.

Denver Police Chief Paul Pazen called the daytime shooting in a busy Denver neighborhood "brazen" and praised community members who came forward "without fear" to help police identify and arrest the two men.

Both are in custody in Denver County jail.
