Here are the top stories today in Denver:

  1. A Denver firefighter has been arrested for insurance fraud. A DFD employee, Michael Chalchesa, has been fired after eight months on duty. The charges stem from a car accident where Chalchesa is now accused of falsifying information provided to insurance company about the accident and repairs that were made to his car. (CBS4)
  2. Gains made during the pandemic to end childhood hunger have been lost after the federal tax credit expires. Research has found that food security significantly decreased when the federal child tax credits expired last January. Researchers also found that those most impacted by the cuts were Black, Hispanic and Indigenous families. (CO Newsline)
  3. Many of Xcel Energy's customers will see $33 drop in December's bill. Xcel says that some of its Colorado customers will see a decrease in their natural gas bill in December because of a fuel price adjustment. (FOX31)
  4. Surprise, more mayoral candidates are jumping into the race. Mike Johnston is the latest candidate to announce that he's running for Denver mayor. With this addition of Johnston yesterday, that's 18 candidates vying for what's considered to be one of the most powerful political seats in Colorado. I know what you are thinking, just as one election ends, another begins – Denver's next local municipal election is on April 4, 2023, (Denverite)
  5. Wanna hit the slopes, but don't wanna break the budget? Here's a list of places in Colorado that won't entirely zap your bank account. (5280)
