Here are the top stories today in Denver:

  1. After a 100 years, the Colorado Compact may have created more problems than it solved. Originally devised to split up the water that flowed out of the Colorado River, today more than 40 million people depend on the river, and it's quickly drying up. The original agreement may have never been an accurate way to distribute the water in the first place. (CBS4)
  2. More than 65 people have lost their lives on Denver's streets so far this year. Denver's streets are proving to be deadly. In just the past 27 days, there's been 10 traffic deaths. (Westword)
  3. Denver hopes housing programs will support communities of color. Denver's Department of Housing Stability (HOST) wants to grow Denver's BIPOC home ownership by 4 percent with programs targeted to boost those community's ownership rates. (9News)
  4. Students claim that Metropolitan State University of Denver's Indigenous Grant Program is a failure. Some students have been keeping track of MSU's Indigenous and Native Peoples' Grant page, and it turns out that and that it wasn't created until Aug. 23, months after the university's very public announcement (Westword)
  5. FAA says Denver International Airport is at an increased risk of midair crashes. Because there are two busy runways that are close together at DIA, pilots that approach the airport have been turning off "nuisance" collision warning systems, increasing the risk of a midair crash. From my notebook:

  • Watch out for West Nile. The state's average numbers are up so far this year. Authorities think that it's probably due to hot temperatures this summer. Nearly two-thirds of cases in 2022 have resulted in hospitalization, and so far, five have been fatal. Maybe it's time to get some deet! (CPR)
