Colorado Drivers Urged To Use Caution In Morning Commute

Officials are urging drivers to delay their commutes as ice and snow cause slick conditions in Denver's metro area and Boulder.

Colorado Department of Transportation officials are urging drivers to delay their morning commutes Tuesday to give plows enough time to clear roadways. A Winter Weather Advisory has been issued by the National Weather Service for Denver's metro area and Boulder until 2 p.m. Tuesday.

Up to 14 inches of snow was expected to fall overnight in some regions and winds could gust up to 40 mph, weather officials said.

"Residents should remain aware of rapidly changing road conditions," the National Weather Service alert read.

The National Weather Service urged drivers to slow down and use caution while traveling.

"If you must travel, keep an extra flashlight, food, and water in your vehicle in case of an emergency," the alert read.

Openings have been delayed Tuesday for many recreation centers, schools and government offices. Denver, Jeffco, Littleton and Boulder Valley public schools are operating on a two-hour delay.

A Winter Storm Warning was issued until 6 a.m. Tuesday for the following areas: Boulder, Golden, Lakewood, Longmont, Estes Park, Glendevey, Nederland, Red Feather Lakes, Bailey, Central City, Evergreen, Georgetown, Idaho Springs and Westcreek.

The storm is expected to move out of Colorado Tuesday.

"As the storm moves out, the coldest temperatures of the week are expected Wednesday morning," the warning read.
