Here are the top stories in Denver today:
- Denver jumps into action when 100s of immigrants unexpectedly show up on buses. Emergency shelters were quickly set up to accommodate the arrival at least 100 immigrants without any warning. The city scrambled to turn a rec center into a shelter to give them somewhere to go. (Denverite)
- Kiewit fined $45,000 after the Central 70 project flooded. Part of the lowered portion of the highway is low enough that it is prone to flooding. In order to resolve this problem, large pumps were installed in hopes of keeping water out of the highway. This past summer, the pumps malfunctioned and filled the highway with water, and now CDOT has fined the contractor for the malfunction. (9News)
- Park Hill Golf Course Small Area Plan approved by Denver City Council. Despite hundreds of letters in opposition to the plan from the community, City Council voted 10-3 to approve the PHGC Small Area Plan, which paves the way for development despite the land being protected by a perpetual conservation easement. (Denverite)
- Free meals are coming to most of Colorado's school districts. Next year, thanks to a state-wide voter approved measure, school districts across the state will be providing free lunches to their students. So far 16 have announced they will provide free meals next year, but several districts, including Denver and Douglas County, haven't decided if they are going to participate in the program. (CO Sun)
- Colorado hopes to develop its own e-bike program catering to low-income communities. The state is launching a $10 million e-bike rebate program this spring. While the details have yet to be worked out, the program will be available to state residents at a certain income threshold. (CPR)
