Denver Named Top U.S. City for Book Clubs
New study highlights the city's abundance of coffee shops, libraries and literary meetups fueling its thriving reading community.

As book clubs continue to surge in popularity thanks to online reading communities and “BookTok,” Denver is earning recognition as one of the best places in the country for readers to gather. A new study from furniture and décor brand Joybird ranked Denver No. 5 among the best U.S. cities to host a book club, highlighting the city’s mix of cozy gathering spaces, strong library access, and active literary community.
To determine the rankings, Joybird analyzed several factors tied to successful book club culture. The study examined the number of libraries, bookstores, coffee shops, and book club meetups per 100,000 residents, as well as Google search interest for “book clubs near me.” Researchers also considered literacy rates, average bookstore ratings, median home size, and grocery costs, all of which can influence how easy — and enjoyable — it is to host regular gatherings.
Denver scored particularly well for its abundance of coffee shops and strong interest in local book clubs. According to the study, the city has 12.4 coffee shops per 100,000 residents, nearly double the national average of 6.4. Denver also posted a book club search interest score of 45, well above the national average of 37, indicating that residents are actively seeking reading communities and literary events.

The city also offers plenty of resources for avid readers. Denver has 6.7 libraries per 100,000 residents and 4.2 book club meetups per 100,000 residents, helping to make literary gatherings accessible throughout the metro area. Combined with Denver’s strong network of independent bookstores and neighborhood cafés, the city gives book lovers plenty of places to meet, browse, and discuss their latest reads.
Hosting at home may also be easier in Denver compared to other large cities. The study found the median home size in Denver is 1,956 square feet, providing enough room for the increasingly popular “host at home” style of book club gatherings, complete with snacks, wine, and cozy seating.
