Denver Pot Rules Taking Shape

Rules include ventilation plan and requiring patrons to sign acknowledgment that they won't drive impaired.

The rules governing marijuana use in Denver are beginning to take shape. The city has posted the rules spelling out how and when adults will be able to consume marijuana in designated areas. Denver will be the first city in the country allowing social consumption.

The rules will implement a part of the law passed in November creating a four-year pilot program allowing the businesses to establish areas where people 21 and over can consume marijuana.

They spell out everything from the fact businesses will be required to have ventilation plan to the fact that patrons will be required to sign an acknowledgement that they will not drive impaired.

Among the proposed rules:

  • Patrons must sign acknowledgements that they won't drive impaired and won't sell or distribute marijuana for money;
  • If the business has a liquor license, they wont be allowed to sell alcohol while marijuana is being used;
  • They will have to have a ventilation system if vaping is going to happen;
  • Businesses looking to hold events, will be able to apply for one-time permits; and
  • Business must demonstrate "evidence of community support which could take the form of a letter of community support or good neighborhood agreement from an eligible neighborhood organization.
