Government Shutdown: Colorado 11th Most-Affected State: Study

As US Senate works on a deal, a new study shows which states will suffer the most in a federal government shutdown.

WASHINGTON, DC -- As lawmakers in the nation's capital struggle to find compromise, the government shutdown entered its third day on Monday.The impasse meant non-essential federal employees were not at work and some government services were halted.

The U.S. Senate hashed out a deal with Democrats to vote to end the shutdown Monday afternoon. According to Government Executive magazine:

The Senate vote came as hundreds of thousands of federal workers in the eastern part of the country were sent home, after reporting to work for a few hours to initiate an “orderly shutdown.” When those employees will be asked to return to work is unclear, and will depend on how quickly the House acts and President Trump signs the revised CR into law.

Consumer finance site WalletHub took a look at all 50 states to determine how much each is impacted by the shutdown, considering factors like each state’s share of federal jobs and contracts to the percentage of kids covered by the Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP).

According to the rankings, Colorado is the 11th most-affected state overall. With No. 1 being most affected and 25 being average, Colorado ranked in the upper half of the country when it comes to the following:

  • 21st - Share of Federal Jobs
  • 11th - Federal Contract Dollars Per Capita
  • 12th- Small Business Lending Per Capita
  • 8th - Real Estate as a Percentage of GSP
  • 19th - Access to National Parks
  • 11th - % of Children under CHIP

As you might expect, Washington, D.C. was the most affected state. Minnesota was the least affected state overall, followed closely by Michigan and Indiana.
