Juniper Village Partners with Denver Mountain Parks to Show Residents Colorado’s Iconic Bison Herd

A morning at the Buffalo Herd Nature Preserve reminded residents and the community that meaningful experiences have no age limit

[Denver, CO] - For residents of Juniper Village - The Spearly Center, a recent morning in the foothills of Genesee, Colorado turned into something memorable.

Juniper Village - The Spearly Center is a Denver skilled care community dedicated to supporting individuals living with dementia, brain injury, and complex behavioral health and medical needs, offering both long-term skilled care and short-term rehabilitation tailored to each resident's unique needs. That commitment extends well beyond clinical care, and a recent outing to the Buffalo Herd Nature Preserve is a perfect example of why.

Thanks to a special partnership with Denver Mountain Parks, a division of the City and County of Denver, residents visited the Buffalo Herd Nature Preserve for an up-close encounter with one of Colorado's most iconic natural treasures: the Denver bison herd.

The outing was made possible through a special partnership with Denver Mountain Parks, a division of the City and County of Denver. For Juniper, creating opportunities like this one, experiences that bring joy, curiosity, and a sense of wonder to everyday life, is central to how the community defines quality care.

Ranger Alejandro Sanchez of Denver Mountain Parks guided residents through the history of the herd, the behaviors of these remarkable animals, and the vital role bison play in Colorado's natural heritage. Residents came ready with questions, and Ranger Sanchez delivered, turning the visit into something as educational as it was memorable.

The highlight of the day? 16 baby bison spotted among the herd. With binoculars in hand, residents were able to take in the calves up close, a rare and delightful sight that drew smiles and wonder in equal measure.

Juniper Village - The Spearly Center extends its heartfelt thanks to Denver Mountain Parks, Park Ranger Supervisor Ryan Phillian, and Ranger Alejandro Sanchez for their generosity, expertise, and genuine enthusiasm in making this experience possible. Partnerships like this one are what allow Juniper to go beyond the walls of the community and bring its residents into the full life of the world around them.

At Juniper Communities, the belief is simple: quality of life means more than quality care. It means connection to nature, to community, and to the experiences that make life rich at every age.
