Man Sentenced For Deadly DUI Crash On I-70

DENVER, CO — A 28-year-old man who caused a deadly crash on Interstate 70 in 2018 has been sentenced to 10 years in prison, according to the Denver District Attorney's Office. Ivan Zamarripa-Castaneda pleaded guilty in July to one count of vehicular homicide while driving intoxicated.

Zamarripa-Castaneda was driving his pickup truck on March 3 when he tried to merge onto I-70 near North Brighton Boulevard and crashed into a semi truck, which caught on fire and struck a concrete barrier. The driver of the semi, 57-year-old John Anderson of Lone Tree, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Zamarripa-Castaneda fled after the crash and was arrested the next morning at his house.

Zamarripa-Castaneda, who is from Mexico, was wanted by Immigration and Customs Enforcement for being in the country illegally, federal officials said. ICE wasn't notified of his arrest until after he was released on bond, according to a report by The Denver Post. The Denver Sheriff Department is required by municipal law to notify ICE of an inmate's release. Three deputies were reassigned during an investigation into the policy breach.
