A recent study analyzed the top 50 most dangerous school zones in Denver.

Schools are places to learn and grow, but unfortunately have become less safe for teachers and students alike in recent years. The increase of danger around school zones is partly due to the steady rise of pedestrian and bicycle fatalities. While students are most at risk, victims of traffic collisions around schools can range in age.

In order to highlight the problem and call for real, actionable reform to help improve traffic safety in Denver, The Fang Law Firm has worked to analyze seven years of traffic data to find the 50 most dangerous school zones in Denver.

  • 5280 High School in Capitol Hill is the most dangerous school zone in Denver.
  • From 2013-2019, there were a total of 139,489 motor vehicle crashes in Denver between the hours of 6 am and 8 pm. Over 32% of those crashes (45,339 collisions) occurred within a quarter-mile of a school.
  • The top 5 most dangerous school zones are all within a 1.5-mile radius of the State Capitol Building.

While much more is required at the city and state level to protect students and pedestrians alike, we can improve safety by being fully aware of our surroundings. It is also recommended for drivers to follow all relevant traffic laws and speed limits, keep their eyes on the road, and stay calm. Pedestrians and cyclists can do their part by being extra cautious when crossing the street, limiting distractions, and always choosing to opt for a helmet.
