Snow And Bitter Cold Continue In Colorado On Wednesday

The NWS declared a Winter Storm Warning, many schools and government offices are closed, flights have been canceled and roads are slick.

DENVER, CO —As of Wednesday morning, the current snowfall in Colorado had dumped between seven and 11 inches on much of the Front Range, and the snow and bitter cold are expected to continue through the day Wednesday, according to the National Weather Service.

The NWS upgraded its alert for the area to a Winter Storm Warning early Wednesday morning.

Though the snow had slowed to flurries in some areas by 8 a.m., Denver is expected to get three more inches during the day Wednesday. The high temperature is 16 degrees, but it will feel much colder due to wind gusts of up to 16 mph, the NWS reported.

The snowfall should slow even further Wednesday afternoon.

Snowplows are hard at work, but most cities in the metro area are on crash alerts, and the Colorado Department of Transportation is warning drivers of challenging conditions.

Numerous school and government offices throughout the area are closed, and several flights have been canceled or delayed at Denver International Airport, according to the Denver Post.

According to the Post, 136 flights have been canceled and another 28 have been delayed, with Southwest, SkyWest and United the most affected airlines. In a tweet, the airport reminded travelers to:

  • Check your flight status with your airline before heading to the airport
  • Drive with caution as roads may be slick.
  • Consider taking the RTD A-Line
  • Expect to spend extra time on board before takeoff while deicing takes place

The City of Denver has warned people about the dangers of remaining outside during the cold temperatures, and is reminding people who need shelter or support, or know somebody who needs shelter and support, to call 211 or visit the Find Shelter section on the city's website.

Art Garage in Denver has announced it will begin at noon and run all afternoon programming.

Meanwhile, the University of Denver will have a remote format day, and St. Vrain Valley Schools announced it will have a shortened online school day.

Government offices that are confirmed as closed include:

  • Castle Rock
  • Greeley
  • Jefferson County
  • Lakewood
  • Loveland
  • Northglen
  • Thornton
  • Weld County

Several other government offices have delayed their opening or are still trying to determine whether to open.
