Here are the top stories today in Denver:
- The Suncor shutdown is causing an increase in gasoline prices. When the temporary shutdown of the Suncor Energy oil and gas refinery was announced, the fear was that gas prices would go up, and those predictions appear to be materializing. According to the American Automobile Association, the average price of a gallon of regular gas in Colorado has spiked from $2.86 to $3.82 since Suncor Energy ceased operations at the Commerce City refinery on Dec. 21. - Can Coloradoans lead the way in making the climate change transition? The shift from fossil fuels to renewable energy is complex, even in places like garages. The dilemma is whether giving a functional gas-powered machine for someone else to use is the ethical thing to do, and whether or not reusing it will it have a positive impact on the environment. (CO Sun)
- California is the lone holdout on a revised water deal. Western states that are dependent on Colorado River water have reached a consensus on a plan to significantly reduce water consumption in the basin. California claims largest share of the river's water, has yet to join the agreement, but says it will release its own version. (AP)
- RTD is considering banning riders that have no destination. The Regional Transportation District (RTD) is contemplating a permanent ban on riders for actions it deems unacceptable, as part of its ongoing efforts to enhance the safety of its buses, trains, and stations. The proposed policy changes are scheduled to be presented to RTD's board of directors for approval in February. (Denverite)
- Denver conducts its annual homeless point in time count. The Point in Time (PIT) Count is an annual measurement of the number of individuals who are homeless and living in emergency shelters, or in transitional housing programs. This count captures those who are literally homeless and does not include individuals who are at risk of becoming homeless. (MDHI)
