Traffic Calming Improvements Installed In Montbello
Refuge island and flashing lights will make Albrook Drive safer where a pedestrian was killed last year.

DENVER, CO - From Denver Public Works Department: Moving forward with Denver’s Vision Zero commitment to eliminate traffic deaths and serious injuries on our roads by 2030,Denver Public Works recently made safety enhancements in Montbello to help those who are walking reach their destinations safely. Denver Public Works has added a pedestrian refuge island and a Rapid Flashing Beacon on a stretch of Albrook Drive between Peoria Street and Tulsa Court to help calm traffic and promote safer crossings. Last year, a driver hit and killed a pedestrian who was trying to cross Albrook.
The new pedestrian refuge island will help provide a visual cue for drivers to slow down, while the new Rapid Flashing Beacon will improve pedestrian visibility and increase the rate at which drivers yield to pedestrians in the crosswalk. To activate the beacon, a pedestrian pushes the button, which causes the beacon to flash rapidly, letting drivers know a pedestrian is waiting to cross.
Vision Zero best practices include design elements like multi modal street standards, leading pedestrian intervals, slow zones and median refuges. For more information on Denver’s Vision Zero program, please visit denvergov.org/visionzero.
