Metro Denver, Boulder Storm Warning: Drivers Urged To Use Caution

Blizzard conditions have forced many road closures across northeast Colorado.

A National Weather Service storm alert for the western metro Denver area and Boulder remains in effect until 6 a.m. Friday. Cities in Colorado are continuing to staff snowplows amid the spread of the new coronavirus.

Up to 12 inches of snow is expected to fall in some areas overnight, weather officials said. Winds could gust up to 40 mph.

"Plan on snow and slush covered roads. Blowing snow will significantly reduce visibility," the alert read. "The combination of treacherous road conditions and poor visibility will result in difficult travel [...] Strong winds and heavy snow could cause power line and tree damage."

Weather officials said drivers who plan to head into the plains could face wind gusts of up to 55 mph.

"Blizzard conditions and numerous road closures existed east of I-25 and over the Palmer Divide," the storm alert read. "Snowfall rates in some areas are still in the 1 to 2 inch per hour range, and visibilities in many areas east of I-25 have dropped to one quarter mile or less in heavy snow and blowing snow."
