Golden Public Art: New Sculpture Changes Form As You Pass [WATCH]

A new public sculpture for Hwy 93 by Loveland artist Joe Norman appears to change from running children to flying raptors as you pass

GOLDEN, CO – A new Golden public art installation at the entrance to Hwy 93 will appear to change shape as viewers pass by. Loveland artist Joe Norman's work "Run and Fly" appears to change from silhouettes of three running children to a red-tail hawk in flight depending on the perspective of the viewer. You can see the optical illusion in the video above.

"Run and Fly" was selected by the Golden Public Art Commission after a public vote by Golden residents. Artist Norman said he is "inspired by the idea that both humans and nature can exist harmoniously and are not mutually exclusive."

"This piece of art will serve as an entryway into the City from the north, providing a sense of arrival to Golden," the commission said on their website. The GPAP is a branch of the Golden Civic Foundation, but also receives funding from the City of Golden, as well as private contributions.

The piece will be installed on the west side of Hwy 93, approximately 1,600 feet north of Pine Ridge Road.

Travelers heading northbound will see three red-tailed hawks, while those going southbound will see a group of children running together.

Norman says he's inspired by nature.

"I steal natural shapes for my sculpture. Animal bones and river stones feel familiar in my gut. They’re all over the place, and they’re beautiful. I take emotional resonance and apply it to beautiful shapes," he said in an artist statement. "The right emotion AND the right shape just might be powerful to the right person. Maybe it is a small example of how to practice BOTH AND in addition to EITHER OR."
