JeffCo 'Courage Walk' To Honor Victims Of Crime

From the Office of the District Attorney: National Crime Victims’ Rights Week is celebrated this year from April 7-13, 2019. This is a time for communities to come together to honor victims of crime and to promote victims’ rights. This year’s theme is “Honoring Our Past. Creating Hope for the Future.”

Across the country, communities will hold events in honor of victims of crime. In Jefferson County the week-long remembrance ends in celebration at the 26th annual Courage Walk on Saturday, April 13. The Courage Walk is held each year at this time to honor of victims of crime, to recognize their strength and courage, and to speak out in unison for the rights of crime victims today and in the future.

The Courage Walk starts at 10 a.m. with a continental breakfast and registration on the steps of the Jefferson County Courts and Administration Building. The walk begins at 11 a.m. Doves will be released in honor of victims following a short ceremony at the Courage Garden. The Courage Garden was built to provide a place of respite for crime victims and their families on the courthouse grounds.

"Justice for victims of crime is the cornerstone of the work we do,” says District Attorney Pete Weir, “It is an honor to support their remarkable hope and resiliency on their journey to healing.”

Pledges and donations are not required for participation at this event, however, proceeds raised will go to the maintenance of the Courage Garden, training for victim advocate volunteers and to help victims of crime and other traumatic events in our community. A suggested donation of $10 is recommended, but not required.

The event is family friendly and the one-mile walk is wheelchair accessible. Leashed pets are welcome.
