This year for several reasons Golden History Museum & Park was forced to cancel its popular annual cemetery tours. However, we were recently gifted the copyright and to the book, The History of Golden and its Golden City Cemetery, and companion blog, written by Arthur Lowther. In lieu of a physical tour, during October and November the Museum will present a “Virtual Cemetery Tour” by reposting entries from the blog.
Arthur Lowther was the descendant of early Golden settlers, born January 26, 1918, in Pocatello, Idaho. He served as the City of Golden’s third City Manager in the 1950s. Lowther was very passionate about history and developed a deep interest in the city’s historic cemetery during his tenure. In 2008, Lowther published a book about some of the notable residents of the Golden Cemetery. He was known to have quipped that he was inspired to write the book because he wanted to “get to know his new neighbors.” Arthur Lowther died on February 9, 2011 at the age of 93. He is buried in the Golden Cemetery.
