City Of Lakewood Launches 'Get On Board' Campaign

LAKEWOOD, CO — The City of Lakewood is seeking volunteers to fill openings on boards and commissions. The new members will give their input on community issues and help inform policy.

Applications are due by 5 p.m. Feb. 14.

The city released the following overviews of available positions:

Board of Appeals

This board has three openings for three-year terms starting in April. The board hears and decides appeals from any order, requirement, decision or determination made by the city’s codes administrator. Members must be qualified by experience and training to make decisions about building construction. Meetings occur as needed, and typically that’s four or five times a year for one to two hours.

Historic Preservation Commission

This commission has two openings for four-year terms starting in April. Applicants must demonstrate a competency in historic preservation by having a background in architecture, history, urban planning, building trades, real estate or related fields. The commission conducts public hearings on applications for landmark designation, reviews alteration certificates and applications for relocating historically designated structures, and makes recommendations to the City Council. The commission must meet four times a year.

Judicial Review Commission

This commission has three openings for four-year terms starting in April. The commission investigates all complaints about Lakewood municipal judges and recommends potential actions to City Council. It also nominates, interviews and recommends judicial candidates to City Council. Meetings occur when necessary, which is typically once a year.

Lakewood Advisory Commission

This commission has several openings for three-year terms. Members serve as advisers to City Council by researching specific issues of interest to residents and providing recommendations for potential action. Members should plan to attend at least one meeting a month. Applicants must attend both a full commission meeting and an individual committee meeting before submitting an application. Planning Commission

This commission has an opening for an at-large position for a term ending in 2021, and it has an opening for the Ward 1 seat with a four-year term starting in April. The Ward 1 commissioner must live in that ward, but the at-large commissioner can live anywhere except Ward 5. The commission conducts public hearings on rezoning and subdivision applications, approves certain special use permits and reviews site plans. Members also serve as the Board of Adjustment. It meets at 7 p.m. the first and third Wednesdays of each month for regular meetings and at 6:30 p.m. on the second and fourth Wednesdays of each month for study sessions.
