Here are the top stories in Lakewood today:

  1. Breaking up is hard to do: Douglas County voted yesterday to formally leave the Tri-County Health compact. The county commissioners plan to establish their own single-county public health agency. (9news)
  2. Colorado doctor warns of possibility of 'twindemic': The senior medical director of infection prevention at UCHealth says that because there wasn't much flu activity due to the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 – which had most people working from home and many schools operated remotely – the warning is that there's the potential for both the COVID-19 pandemic continuing and a huge spike in influenza at the same time. (FOX31)
  3. Denver moves to close Civic Center Park: Citing crime and safety risks, which supposedly "jeopardizes the public's ability to safely enjoy one of Denver's treasured outdoor spaces," Denver is closing the park indefinitely. (Channel7)
  4. It's that time of year: Colorado's tarantula "migration" is underway. Over the next few weeks, the setting sun will lure thousands of hairy, eight-legged creatures out of their burrows across the eastern plains in search for love. (Denver7)

  • What's in that picnic basket Yogi? It's that time of year when bears are more focused on eating than keeping a low profile. The combination of fall berries and hungry bears equals increased sightings across @JeffcoOpenSpace's foothill parks, particularly at Meyer, Pine, White Ranch, and Lair o' the Bear. Be bear aware and prepared to see #bears. (Instagram)
  • Put this on your calendar: Visit Colorado museums for free on Museum Day, Sept. 18, 2021. (Patch)
