Deadly Shooting Outside Lakewood Walmart: Victim, Suspect ID'd

Lakewood police have identified a man who was killed in a Walmart parking lot Friday.

LAKEWOOD, CO — A man who was killed Friday in Lakewood has been identified, but the motive for the shooting remains under investigation, police said.

Lakewood resident Steven Scott Hargis, 27, was shot to death while he was sitting in his car in the Walmart parking lot at 440 Wadsworth Blvd, police said. The suspect has been identified as 46-year-old Matthew Lyvon Paul, of Denver, according to the Lakewood Police Department. Paul was shot and killed by police nearby.

Officers were called to the area just before 10:30 a.m. after a report of shots fired outside the store. Witnesses said they saw a man "shoot multiple rounds at a victim sitting in his car," police said.

Paul took off across Wadsworth and tried to carjack employees and customers at the Grease Monkey, 395 Wadsworth Blvd., according to police. After he was unable to steal a vehicle, he ran into a neighborhood in the 7700 block of West 4th Ave., officials said.

Paul then started firing at cars, homes and officers, police said.

He was shot by police and taken to the hospital, where he died.

The Jefferson County Critical Incident Response Team was investigating the shooting.
