Here are the top stories today in Lakewood:
- Lakewood woman struggles to find affordable housing as she faces eviction. The retired nursing assistant, Lou Erickson, has been on the hunt for a new home, but so far, there's no place to go. She and her 40-year-old learning disabled daughter are finding themselves without a place to live. (CBS)
- Pediatric respiratory infections on the rise in Colorado. Public health departments across the state are suggesting that families take extra precautions with their children because of a significant rise in RSV hospitalizations across the Denver metro area. RSV is a common respiratory virus that can cause mild, cold-like symptoms and is the leading cause of bronchiolitis. (CO Hometown)
- Colorado's gig workers aren't making enough money to survive. The study shows that the average gig driver in the metro Denver area makes around $5.49 per hour. Paired with increased gas prices and a 50 percent increase in rents over the past year, some drivers are having to work 18 hours a day to get by. (Guardian)
- Grant of $2 million to the University of Colorado aimed at preventing gun violence in Colorado schools. Shootings at U.S. schools have already hit record highs in 2022, and other types of violence continues to boil over at schools as well. The University of Colorado has received a grant from the Bureau of Justice Assistance, which will develop a program for Colorado schools to better manage the crisis. (CU Today)
