JEFFERSON COUNTY, CO — A historic manganese steel cannonball-style safe is now on display in the Jefferson County Treasurer’s office. Jeffco Treasurer Jerry DiTullio found out the safe was in storage and had it cleaned up and moved to the lobby of his office where visitors can see it, officials said.

The safe, which was purchased by Jefferson County in 1933 during the Great Depression, was used to safely store county funds when there was little or no access to banks, Jeffco officials said.

The safe was originally stored in the treasurer’s vault in the first courthouse until DiTullio decided to put it on display.

Unfortunately there was no hidden stash of money inside the old safe to help with Jeffco's budget woes; however there's now some treats inside.

"... visitors can see it and help themselves to a chocolate gold coin or $1.00 mint candy (NOT purchased with taxpayers dollars!)," read a post on Jefferson County's Facebook page.

More about the history of the safe and additional photos will be included in the December Issue of the Engage Jeffco newsletter, officials said. Residents can sign up for the newsletter here.
