Lakewood Celebrates 'Older Americans Month' In May

Older Adult Wellness Fair planned at Charles Whitlock Recreation Center.

LAKEWOOD, CO - From Lakewood Community Center: Older adults make a positive impact in and around Lakewood. The city will celebrate Older Americans Month by promoting ways that older adults can stay healthy and independent, with resources to help all community members support and celebrate this population.

Lakewood Recreation invites the public to enjoy a fun, free day of fitness, wellness and information sharing from 9 a.m. to noon on Friday, May 17, during theOlder Adult Wellness Fair at Charles Whitlock Recreation Center, 1555 Dover St. Whether you are age 55 or older, a caregiver or live with someone who is an older adult, there is valuable information for you at this popular annual event.

Attendees can enjoy fitness demonstrations, balance and strength tests, health assessments, blood screenings and blood pressure checks. Discounted fitness passes are also available, and more than 70 local vendors and resources will be in attendance. The event is free to the public, and no registration is necessary.

Other activities in celebration of Older Americans Month include:

  • An art show throughout May at the Lakewood Cultural Center, 470 S. Allison Parkway, featuring artwork by students and instructors from the Clements Community Center. A free reception will be held on May 9.
  • Free days with drop-in fitness, dance classes and billiards on May 7 and 23 at Clements Community Center, 1580 Yarrow St., and with Lakewood Rides transportation service.
  • A proclamation will be read by City Council on May 13.
