Lakewood Police Warn Of Social Security Scam

Lakewood residents are getting phone calls from scammers who claim to be federal officials, police warned.

LAKEWOOD, CO — The Lakewood Police Department is warning residents about a scam that involves callers who claim to be from the Social Security Administration. The department has issued an alert that explains what residents can do if they receive the calls.

"If you receive a voice message from the Social Security Administration telling you that your Social Security number has been suspended and requesting that you call back, don’t call back or talk to the caller," the alert read. "The real Social Security Administration will not call you."

The scammer will attempt to get the last four digits of your social security number, ask you to buy gift cards for them and convince you that you are in trouble, police said.
