Lakewood: Volunteers Sought For City Commissions

The deadline to apply to serve on Lakewood's commissions and boards is Dec. 29.

LAKEWOOD, CO -- Do you have expertise in historic preservation? Are you passionate about diversity and inclusion? Would you like to share your experience in building and zoning? The City of Lakewood seeks citizen volunteers for several of the city's boards and commissions. Join your city's quasi-governmental bodies and "become part of the conversation to shape the city’s future," a press release said.

The deadline to apply is 5 p.m. Dec. 19. Applications can be found online at Lakewood.org/GetOnBoard, which provides a full description of the qualifications for each position.

The Advisory Commission for an Inclusive Community has several openings. Members serve in an advisory role to Lakewood City Council, researching specific issues or topics of interest to Lakewood residents and making recommendations for potential action. Members should plan to attend a full commission meeting and a committee meeting each month. Applicants must attend both a full commission and a committee meeting before applying. The Board of Appeals has one opening. The board serves as a quasi-judicial body that hears and decides appeals of rulings or decisions made by Lakewood’s codes administrator. Meetings occur as necessary, but the board typically meets four or five times a year. Applicants must be qualified by experience and training in building construction.

The Historic Preservation Commission has one opening for a three-year term. Applicants are not required to be Lakewood residents, but they should be a professional in a preservation-related discipline such as architecture, history, urban planning or related fields. The commission conducts public hearings on applications for landmark designation and makes recommendations to city council. It also conducts reviews of alteration certificates and applications for the relocation of designated structures. Meetings occur when the commission has an item for consideration, with a minimum of four meetings per year.
