  1. Metro Denver is experiencing an 'extreme' drought. In early December, Denver's drought graduated from "severe" to "extreme" on the U.S. Drought Monitor, a national service that tracks drought conditions across the country. (Denverite)
  2. Sports gambling profits soar as online gaming takes off in Colorado. October was the most active month yet in Colorado's fledgling sports betting market, with $491 million wagered on everything from football to basketball to baseball. Even table tennis. (CPR)
  3. Xcel bills are going up this winter for Colorado customers. Colorado's Xcel customers could see their monthly natural gas bills rise by as much as $27 compared to last winter's charges– even if they use the same amount of energy. (Westword)
  4. Paid family, and medical leave for 28,000 state workers in jeopardy. Lawmakers reject extending rule and state's personnel department exploring potential options for preserving benefit until the legal snag can be fixed. (CO Newsline)
  5. Big avalanche danger in parts of Rocky Mountains this weekend. Parts of the state are expecting to receive two to three feet of snow this weekend, and as a result of the rapid snowfall, avalanche danger will spike.
