Model Rocket Launching Could End In Lakewood: Report
For more than 30 years, the Colorado Rocketry Association of Space Hobbyists used Bear Creek Park in Lakewood for its twice-monthly events.
LAKEWOOD, CO — The City of Lakewood wants to put an end to model rocket launching in Bear Creek Park, citing concerns about noise, visual impact and fire, according to a report. The launches are held twice per month in the 600,000-acre park by the Colorado Rocketry Association of Space Hobbyists (CRASH).
The city notified CRASH of its decision this past December, Westword reports, letting the group know that while its 2019 schedule was approved, it would need to find a new location for the 2020 season. While the city said it doesn’t disapprove of the work done by CRASH, Bear Creek Park has seen an increase in visitors, which causes concern about the rocket launches due to crowding and the risk of fire.
Lakewood city code prohibits the unlawful discharging of "dangerous missiles," which includes model rockets; however, the ordinance also includes language stating the city can allow rocket launches in designated areas. CRASH members said Bear Creek Park was a perfect location for events due to its size and proximity to Denver.

So far, the group has had no luck in securing a new venue, and officials are hoping to work with the city to add specific language to city code allowing the launches to continue in Bear Creek Park.
